Episode 1x12 - Faith

During a routine mission to save some kids from a Rawhead, Dean is electrocuted and suffers a heart attack. He's given, at most, a couple of months to live. Sam refuses to believe it and searches for a way to save his brother. A contact from their father's journal leades them to a 'specialist' in Nebraska - a faith healer by the name of Roy le Grange. At the first meeting they attend, Dean is singled out and healed, but he sees something that shouldn't be there, and that he can't explain.

Dean gets the impression that the healer is not to be trusted, and that something bigger is at work. As they investigate, they discover that it's not Roy le Grange they have to worry about, and eventually have to face Death itself.

Facts & Figures.

Marshall Hall. Died at 4:17 - the exact time Dean was healed.
Jogging Woman. --> Pro-Choice Advocate.

Monster of the Week.

A Grim Reaper.

Not 'The' Grim Reaper in the sense of a black robe wearing, scythe carrying skeleton (see Terry Pratchet's Discworld series), but one of (possibly) many (see Dead Like Me but with more intense make-up).

Controlled through black magic by Roy le Grange's wife, Sue Ann, and used to kill people she deemed 'immoral', i.e. a gay school teacher, a pro-choice advocate.

Wears a suit.
Has the power to stop time.
Can only be seen when victim is near death.

Dean: Have you ever really watched daytime TV? It's terrible.
Sam: ... I talked to your doctor.
Dean: That fabric softener teddybear? Ooh, I want to hunt that little bitch down.

Dean: You better take care of that car, or I swear I'll haunt your ass.
Sam: I don't think that's funny.
Dean: Ah, c'mon. It's a little funny.

Sam: What are you doing here?
Dean: I checked myself out.
Sam: Are you crazy?
Dean: I'm not gonna die in a hospital where the nurses aren't even hot.

Sam: You know, this whole 'I laugh in the face of death' thing? It's crap. I can see right through it.
Dean: Yeah, whatever, dude.

Dean: You're not going to let me die in peace, are you?
Sam: I'm not going to let you die at all.

Sam: If there was something there, I think I would have seen it, too. I mean, I've been seeing a lot of weird things lately.
Dean: Well, excuse me, Psychic Wonder. You're just going to need a little faith on this one.

Dean: Can I just ask one question?
Roy le Grange: Of course you can.
Dean: Why? Why me? Out of all the sick people, why save me?
Roy le Grange: Well, like I said before, the Lord guides me. I looked into your heart and you just stood out from all the rest.
Dean: What did you see in my heart?
Roy le Grange: A young man with an important purpose, a job to do. And it isn't finished.

Sam: Do you really think it's the Grim Reaper? Angel of Death, collect your soul...
Dean: No, not The Grim Reaper, A Grim Reaper.

Sheriff: We catch you around here again, son, we'll put the fear of god in you, understand?
Dean: Yes, sir. Fear of god. Got it.

Dean: God save us from half the people who think they're doing God's work.

The second time Dean is electrocuted.

The Tarot deck owned by Sam is different to the standard. Most television series use the Ryder-Waite version, which is generally considered to be standard. Theirs looks to be a mock-up made for the show. *

The tarot card Sam shows Dean is 'The Magician'.

During the scene in the kitchen of the motel room, Sam has a large spot of puberty on his chin.
